It is one of the oldest Post Graduate Departments of Ranchi University (Established in1958, prior to establishment of Ranchi University). Besides teaching general courses, it offers course in Commonwealth Literature, Translation Studies and Linguistics & Language Teaching. It has a well-equipped library with more than 7000 titles. The department has been inducted under the Special Assistance Programme ( SAP ) at the DRS-I Level by the UGC in the XIth Plan. In 2010-11.
